First Words

Early Language Learning Starts Before Your Child Can Talk

Babies at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips start learning words long before they say any. A baby learns language by hearing people talk, sing, and read every day. Most babies understand many words before they can say them, so the quiet months still count.

You can watch for signs that your baby is ready for more:

  • Babbling, like "ba-ba" or "da-da"
  • Pointing at people or things
  • Copying sounds you make
  • Reaching for books

Every baby moves at a different pace. A baby who points a lot but babbles less is still building language. Responding to whichever sign your baby shows matters more than how fast the first word arrives.

Familiar voices help a baby learn. Our infant room has named, consistent teachers, so your baby hears the same caring voices each day. Over time, those voices become the sounds your baby tries to copy.

Many Orlando parents work early hotel and theme park shifts. Our doors open at 6:30 AM, so you can drop off before your shift starts, and your baby gets a long day of talk, songs, and stories with teachers who know them.

Abeka and Saxon Math

Language Skills Built Into a Named Preschool Curriculum in Dr. Phillips

Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips teaches language through named curricula, not vague promises about play. Families in Dr. Phillips often ask what their child will actually learn, and the answer starts with two programs: Abeka for reading and Saxon Math for numbers.

The Abeka curriculum guides how your child learns letters, sounds, and early reading. A big part of this is phonics, which means matching each letter to the sound it makes. Children first learn letter names and sounds. Then they blend sounds into short words. Reading comes after that step.

Saxon Math adds a different kind of language. Children learn number words and talk through counting out loud. Saying "one, two, three" while touching blocks links a word to an amount.

Storytime sessions build listening skills. Our on-site Library gives children more books to explore, which grows their vocabulary. A child who hears a new word in a story often uses it later in play.

Bring to Your Visit

Questions to Ask About Spanish, Bilingual, and Baby Sign Language Options

Spanish, bilingual, and baby sign language options are worth asking about directly when you visit Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips. Many Orlando parents ask about Spanish for preschoolers or a bilingual preschool. Schedules can change, so the most reliable answer comes from asking in person.

Bring these questions with you:

  • Which languages run right now, and which age groups take part?
  • Do infant teachers use simple signs like "more" or "all done"? Simple signs can help a baby share a need before they can say the word.
  • If your family speaks a language other than English at home, how do teachers support your child's home language during the day?

A language offered for one age may not be offered for another, so check that it fits your child's classroom.

Families new to Florida often have no local friends to ask for advice. Many rely on websites, Google reviews, and Gold Seal status to choose a school. A visit lets you hear language learning in action before you decide.

Drop-Off to Pickup

A Language-Rich Day From Morning Drop-Off to Pickup

A full day at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips gives your child many chances to talk, listen, and learn new words. For parents from Bay Hill and Sand Lake with long workdays, that practice continues from drop-off to pickup.

Creative play centers get children talking. When kids share toys and take turns, they need words to ask, explain, and agree. These small talks build both language and social-emotional learning, which is how children learn to manage feelings and get along with others.

Our Art Studio and Science Lab add new words. In art, children learn names for colors and tools. In science, they learn words for plants, water, and the world outside. Cooking activities teach the names of foods and steps like "stir" and "pour," and social studies teaches the names of people and places.

Central Florida summers bring frequent afternoon thunderstorms. When storms roll in, learning moves indoors to the library, Playtown (our dramatic play room), and the art room. Pretend play in Playtown keeps children talking even when the playground is closed.

Track Your Child's New Words With Live Camera Access and App Updates

Live camera access and app updates at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips let you follow your child's language growth during your workday. This helps Orlando parents who work near Universal Studios, International Drive, or Sand Lake Road's Restaurant Row.

Live parent camera access lets you see storytime and class moments as they happen. You can watch your child listen, point, and join in.

Real-time app updates share what your child did that day, and direct teacher messaging lets teachers tell you about new words and milestones. Developmental milestones are skills most children reach around a certain age, like saying first words or putting two words together. When you know which words your child is working on, you can practice the same ones at home.

If something worries you, reach out to our front desk. Parents tell us concerns are addressed the same day.

Our academy sits 2.6 miles (about 13 minutes) from Universal Studios, so it's easy to check in between shifts. Our open-door policy means you can visit anytime during operating hours, with no notice needed.

Keep Language Skills Growing Through Summer and Into Kindergarten

Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips helps 3- to 5-year-olds keep building language skills as they get ready for kindergarten. Each step builds on the last, so steady time in class matters.

Florida VPK (Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten) is free pre-K for eligible 4-year-olds. At our school, VPK runs during the school year only. Many families moving from other states haven't heard of VPK, so ask us how it works when you visit.

We also accept School Readiness, formerly called 4C. School Readiness is a Florida program that can help eligible families with child care costs. Our transition to kindergarten support helps your child get ready for the move to a new school. That includes listening, following directions, and early reading.
