Outdoor Play Activities

Outdoor Play Activities in Orlando at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips

Outdoor play at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips happens all year, because Orlando weather lets kids play outside in every month. Your child's outdoor time includes playground time, water play, soccer, and summer outings. Our school holds Florida Gold Seal Quality Care. Through outdoor play, our Dr. Phillips child care team helps your child build skills for kindergarten.

Outside All Year

Daily Outdoor Play Builds Strong Bodies and Friendships

Daily outdoor play at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips gives toddlers and preschoolers time to move, explore, and connect with other kids. Outdoor time usually includes:

  • Playground activities on shaded equipment with safety surfacing
  • Outdoor games that get the whole group moving
  • Soccer, as part of our enrichment activities
  • Creative play, where kids invent their own games

Teachers supervise every group outside, and we keep required ratios at all times. Your child is never sent out to play alone.

Kids run, climb, take turns, and make friends on the playground. Waiting for the slide teaches patience. Kicking a ball back and forth teaches give and take. A game of pretend teaches kids how to share ideas with a new friend.

Northern cities often lose months of outdoor time to snow and cold. In Dr. Phillips, there is no winter pause, so your child keeps building these skills all year.

Built for the Heat

Shaded Playground and Water Play Beat the Florida Heat

The shaded playground equipment at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips cuts down on direct sun, so kids can keep playing on hot days. For a playground that Orlando kids can actually use in summer, shade matters as much as the slide. Bare metal and open ground can get very hot in the Florida sun. Our playground also has safety surfacing under the equipment.

Our on-site water play area gives kids a second way to cool off. Children splash and pour while they keep moving, so they stay active instead of sitting out because of the heat.

Orlando summers run hot, so shade and water play are part of how we plan for the heat, not extras. Before your child's first water play day, ask our front desk what to pack.

Storm Days

Storm Days Move Play to the Library, Playtown, and Art Room

Bad weather at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips moves play indoors instead of ending it. Families in Bay Hill and Williamsburg know how fast the sky can change here. Orlando gets frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and hurricane season runs June through November.

When storms roll in, kids move indoors to three spaces: the library for storytime and quiet reading, Playtown (our dramatic play room) where kids act out pretend roles, and the art room for hands-on creative projects.

Your child still gets movement, stories, and creative play on a stormy afternoon. A child pretending to run a shop in Playtown is moving, talking, and solving problems. A child at the art table is building hand strength and focus. The indoor rooms give a rainy day the same goals as a sunny one, so the storm does not throw off your child's whole routine.

Summer My Way

Summer Camp Adds Water Days and Field Trips

Summer My Way Summer Camp at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips gives kids ages 5 to 11 a full summer with outdoor fun built in. For Orlando parents who need summer coverage for a school-age child, camp runs week by week, and each week has its own state theme. Outdoor time is part of every week:

  • Monday water days start each week with cool, active play.
  • Two field trips per week take campers out into the area, including Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake.

For Orlando families, the long stretch without school comes in summer, not winter. Summer camp keeps your child's routine steady during those weeks, with a weekly theme and a plan to follow.

Our weekday hours are 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM. That helps if you work early or late shifts near the theme parks or International Drive.

Ready for Kindergarten

Outdoor Play Supports Kindergarten Readiness

Outdoor play at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips supports kindergarten readiness in ways a desk cannot. For families focused on kindergarten and VPK, outdoor time is part of that preparation.

Running, jumping, and catching build gross motor skills, the big movements that use the arms, legs, and whole body. These skills are part of the developmental milestones teachers look for as kids grow. A child who can balance and catch has more control of their body in a busy classroom.

Group games teach sharing, waiting, and following rules. Teachers call this social-emotional learning, which means learning to manage feelings and get along with others. A kindergarten teacher will expect your child to wait in line and take turns, and a game of tag or soccer is one place to practice.

Outdoor time also balances our indoor lessons. Inside, we use the Abeka curriculum for phonics and early literacy, and Saxon Math for early math skills. Young children learn with their whole bodies, so a day of only seated work would leave out part of how they grow.
