Toddler Classes
Story Time for Toddlers Builds Early Language Skills
Story time in our toddler classes helps Orlando toddlers move from first words toward short sentences. When your child hears stories often, they hear new words used in context, and they hear them again and again. That repetition is how vocabulary grows.
Stories also teach listening and turn-taking. A toddler learns to wait while a friend points at a picture, then gets a turn to point too. Attention spans are short at this age, so a good story for toddlers is usually brief, with bold pictures and simple words.
Read-alouds tie into developmental milestones and social-emotional learning, too. A teacher might stop on a page and ask, "How does the bear feel?" Naming a character's feelings gives your child words for their own feelings later. Our toddlers also learn simple sign language, which gives a child another way to answer before the spoken word comes.
Many Dr. Phillips families move here from the Northeast and Midwest. For a new child, a shared story is an easy way to join the group. Every child knows the same characters, so there's something to talk about on day one.

Abeka and Saxon Math
Preschool Story Time in Dr. Phillips Sits Inside a Named Curriculum
Preschool story time at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips runs alongside two named programs, the Abeka curriculum and Saxon Math. If you're comparing preschools for ages 3 to 5, this is a useful detail. A phrase like "learning through play" on its own doesn't tell you what your child will actually learn.
Our preschool day includes phonics and early literacy, and stories give those lessons meaning. A child who has just practiced letter sounds can then hear those sounds in a real book.
Books have a home base in our on-site Library. Your child also spends time in our other learning centers: the Art Studio, Science Lab, and Computer Lab. Each one gives your child another way to explore what a story started. A book about plants, for example, could lead to questions in the Science Lab.
Ready for Kindergarten
Storytime Helps 4-Year-Olds Get Ready for VPK and Kindergarten
Storytime gives Orlando 4-year-olds in our Pre-K Classroom practice with the skills kindergarten uses every day. During a read-aloud, your child learns to sit with a group, follow along with the story, and answer questions about what happened. Kindergarten teachers rely on these habits all day long.
A child who hasn't practiced listening in a group may find the first weeks of kindergarten harder. Regular story time helps close that gap. Each read-aloud builds a little more focus and a little more confidence in speaking up. This practice is part of how we prepare children for the move to kindergarten, and it builds toward preschool graduation, when your child finishes Pre-K ready for the next step.
Florida VPK (Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten) is free pre-K for eligible 4-year-olds. At Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips, VPK runs during the school year only. We also accept School Readiness, which was formerly called 4C. If you're new to Florida, these programs may be unfamiliar. Our front desk can explain how VPK and School Readiness work.
Storm Days
Rainy Florida Afternoons Move Storytime Indoors
Afternoon thunderstorms don't stop reading at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips. Central Florida summers bring frequent afternoon storms, and hurricane season runs from June through November. If you live in Bay Hill or Sand Lake, you may worry that storm days mean lost learning.
When a storm rolls in, children move to our indoor spaces. The Library is a quiet place for read-alouds and looking at books. In Playtown, our dramatic play room, children can act out stories they've heard, and in the art room they can draw characters and scenes from a story. Indoor time can stretch a story further, too. A child who hears a story about a bakery in the morning can pretend to run one in Playtown that afternoon.
On clear days, children head outside to our shaded playground, which has safety surfacing, and to our water play area. Orlando stays warm all year, and families in the Dr. Phillips area need child care through every month. Our program runs on that same steady, year-round schedule.

Built for Long Shifts
Parents Can Follow Storytime and Early Literacy Progress Every Day
Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips gives parents several ways to follow the school day, even during a long shift. Many Orlando parents work theme park, hotel, and restaurant jobs with early starts and late finishes, so a midday visit isn't always possible.
Live parent camera access lets you watch your child during the day. You can check in on a break and see what the classroom is doing.
Real-time app updates keep you posted on your child's day, and direct teacher messaging lets you ask a question without waiting until pickup. If you have a concern, our front desk addresses it the same day.
